Pandemic Takes Toll on Mental Health

Isolation harshest on young adults, poll shows.

The health of young Americans has been harshly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, particularly in the area of mental health.

A new poll shows that adults under 35 are especially likely to have negative feelings or experience physical or emotional symptoms associated with stress and anxiety. Social distancing and self-quarantining have left many feeling isolated. To a slightly lesser extent, older Americans are feeling the same things.

In a separate study, troubling new data shows the suicide rate among young adults—and even children—has increased by nearly 60 percent over the last ten years, and it continues to climb, making it the second leading cause of death among American children and adults. There are twice as many suicides in the nation as there are homicides.

Health and Human Services officials have voiced concerns about mental health implications since early in the pandemicare. Several health officials warn that depression, mental illness, and the trend toward suicide are not being adequately addressed.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • That Americans feeling hopelessness and despair during this period of the coronavirus would seek help from a friend, a church counselor, or a professional.
  • For U.S. government officials to weigh mental health needs against the guidelines being required to avoid the virus.
